Sure, there are a lot of people treading water, and there are even more gathered at the edge, afraid to get in, but there are few bodies lying at the bottom. Those who take the plunge quickly learn to swim. And if they don’t, the lifeguard generally makes an appearance.
We love amplifying the idea of risk through tall stories. It makes us feel brave for being afraid of the diving board.
